Boat captain in fatal smuggling incident sentenced to 18 years


The captain of a San Diego vessel that sank in 2021 killing three of 32 smuggled migrants on board was sentenced to 18 years in jail Friday, the US Lawyer’s Workplace mentioned in a launch.

Antonio Hurtado, 40, was charged with making an attempt to carry folks into the US illegally and assaulting a Border Patrol agent throughout his arrest.

Wreckage and debris floated ashore.

US District Decide Janis L. Sammartino known as the incident “essentially the most egregious case I’ve ever had in my courtroom in over 15 years within the Southern District of California.”
